How can we create a fertility friendly workplace?

So a fertility friendly workplace is really down to the culture of an organisation. You can have a policy in place, but if the culture doesn't match that policy, people still won't feel safe to open up and to create that psychologically safe environment. What we need is for people to be able to feel safe in talking about this in the first place. So knowing that their manager is aware that they can support them through this process, knowing that there are internal support networks to go to, knowing that they can get flexible working, but also knowing that what they are going through is understood no matter who they are and what their path to parenthood is.

What is the burnout equation?

Burnout is quite an interesting one because when you look at stress, stress itself is actually not that bad for you. Stress is like the turbocharger on an engine. It sort of reconfigures your human machinery so that you have superpowers. You're able to deal with an external threat or challenge that you wouldn't be able to deal with unless you have a little bit of a stress. I mean, whether that was a tiger that you needed to run away from in the caveman and woman years, or if it's a presentation that you need to work on tomorrow, a little bit of stress is okay. The challenge though, is that in our human biology, stress is the exception. It's not supposed to be the default state in which you stay all the time. You also need to activate what is known as your parasympathetic nervous system so that you can rest and digest your food and replenish your muscles and organise your thinking and memory and so on and so forth. In the absence of that, over prolonged periods of time, we eventually burn out and we eventually burn out, not because of the impact of a very big force or a very big stressor or a challenge that comes into our life. It's rather because of the smaller stressors applied over a long period of time. So in that case, burnout happens when the number of stressors multiplied by the frequency of applying them, multiplied by the intensity of each stressor multiplied by the duration of the application, reach a point where you can no longer handle the stress.

What's your advice when interviewing deaf people?

If you are going to interview a deaf person, make sure you prepare. Do some research. For example, how do you interact with a deaf person? Perhaps learn some basic signs like, hello, how are you? Do you want water? Do you want a tea? Just simple signs that I think a deaf person would really, really appreciate. Eye contact is really, really important for a deaf person. Shaking their hands, making them feel welcome, thinking about lighting, making sure they can see you. If there's light behind you, there'll be a shadow. So just being aware of those things.
