What is Resilience?
So resilience, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, and it also uses the word toughness. I would separate the word toughness as being part of our resilience, but a slightly separate part. And ultimately it's finding ways to be able to understand what we need to do in order to be able to recover quickly.
Can anyone be resilient?
Look, absolutely anybody can be resilient. It is certainly a skill or a journey that anybody can find themselves on, and when you fully understand what resilience means and how you can develop it, it's something that all of us can tap into. Of course, like with anything, there may be personality traits that might make it more tricky, or personality traits that might make it more simple, but ultimately it's something that we can all tap into.
What is resilience in a person?
The first thing that I would say when you're looking at resilience in terms of what it means for the average person or the average human being, is that it's not a fixed state. So resilience is not something that like an island that you reach. Resilience is more than that. Resilience is about self understanding, and beneath that is a journey that you can go on, and it's more about understanding that you are on that journey. So rather than it being that fixed destination without being too cheesy, it is way more about the journey.
